West Valley College’s new bachelor’s degree in land stewardship and sustainability feels like one of those higher-ed moves that makes sense the moment you see it on paper. The school is keeping the program tuition-free, building it on an existing park management foundation, and letting students stay put instead of forcing a transfer just to finish a four-year path (The Mercury News, 2026).
That matters for the college-versus-credential conversation because it narrows the distance between learning and employability. A lot of people are not deciding between a classic campus experience and a quick online certificate in the abstract; they are deciding how fast they can get into a field, how much debt they can avoid, and whether the credential will still look serious on a resume.
